The County Administration is the regional authority for reindeer management and our task is to ensure that national goals are put into practice regionally and promote reindeer management development.
|
This aim is realized by among other things supporting development projects, supervision of reindeer affairs, making certain that the interests of reindeer management are taken into consideration in community planning, and through supporting efforts that maintain the administration of justice.
The most important tasks for reindeer management are as follows:
- Community and environmental planning
- Keeping a register and supervising activities
- Radiac issues (measurement and payment of compensation to reindeer owners)
- Issues involving Sami villages (free-range reindeer, demarcation issues, etc.)
- Information for the general public, mediation in disputes
158 kilometres of fence The County Administration is responsible for the maintenance of border fences between Sweden and Norway. There is a total of 158 kilometres of fence, which for the most part are situated in Norwegian territory. Furthermore, the compilation and updating of maps of land used for reindeer herding are also tasks that are delegated to the County Council.
3 million acres The County Administration administrates government land above the cultivation limit in the County of Västerbotten, an area that extends over nearly 3 million acres (1.2 million hectares). This is roughly the equivalent of 2.5 million football pitches.
The mountain administration is responsible for the following tasks:
- Concessions for hunting and fishing
- Fishing and wildlife conservation
- Information, supervision, and surveillance
- Maintenance of the County Administrations mountain buildings and structures
- Concessions for buildings and structures
- The mountain administration is regulated partly by the provision of the Reindeer Husbandry Law and the Reindeer Husbandry Ordinance, and partly by civil legislation.
