Umeå University
 Umeå University was inaugurated in 1965, but the first courses began as early as 1956, with a degree course for dentists.
Subsequently, development has been rapid and the university now has approximately 25,300 students and 3,850 employees. The education covers most sectors. The university offers 100 study programmes and over 1,300 courses. Recently-started programmes include the gastronomy, speech therapy and bio-medicine programmes and Master of Engineering in computing, physics, chemistry and biology, and a police college.
Research is done in all sciences. Much effort and resources is put into the fields of Molecular Biology, Environment/Ecology, Public Administration, Forest Biochemistry, Woman’s Studies, Public Health, Community Care, Industrial Design, Educational Measurement, and Sports Pedagogics. Matters concerning environment are important and always of interest. Umeå School of the Environment is run in cooperation with SLU, Swedens University of Agricultural Sciences.
The university is one of Umeå’s main employers and has been the driving force in the city’s rapid development. Norrland University Hospital, The University of Agricultural Science, The National Institute for Working Life, The Army Officer’s College, The Defence Research Establishment (FOA), and The UMINOVA Foundation Science Park also add to the stimulating environment.
