Faculties of SLU (Swedens University of Agrcultural Sciences) were established in Umeå in 1978, for studies in forestry and agricultural research for Northern Sweden. SLU has 350 employees and 450 students in Umeå.

Forest Research in Umeå covers the whole forest ecosystem to ensure a continous positive utilization of the forests and to increase it’s product- and environment values. There are two forest research stations in Vindeln.

Research in the cultivation of crops in arctic regions, e.g. for bioenergy production, takes place at the Department of Agricultural Research for Northern Sweden at Rörbäcksdalen.

The Department of Aquaculture in Umeå is involved in fish research, breeding, feeding and management of cultured fish and its environmental effects. The Center of Environmental Research is run by SLU in co-operation with Umeå University.
